I know its a different chip, but you just unlocked a core memory of playing Top Gear for me. Transported to my childhood.

The thing is with the Yamaha YM2612 is that it also sounded different depending on the sound driver the game is using. With a lot of western games especially in the US we had GEMS used in games like Comix Zone. In Japan we had the SMPS and it's various versions used in a lot of SEGA games developed internally but other developers used it such as Capcom in Mega Man: The Wily Wars. Most of this uses that distinct Mega Drive sound like you would hear in Sonic 1 and Sonic 2, which they use SMPS.

This really sounds like it was recorded using the Genesi soundfont with a m2m audio cable. To the point that it's kinda distracting from everything after the first track (which, uh, was a bit too epic to get distracted by fiddly little details). Would have liked if they'd fit struments from more games into that soundfont. Most of the piano section is redundant, for example, so could easily have accommodated the SoR/BK piano. Although, kinda feel the opposite on the French horn; Sonic's horns were smooth as butter, but Genessi's was so harsh I always switched french horn channels to trumpets to make ports listenable. A version of Holst's Venus with the Sonic 2 french horn and strings would be awesome.

Surprised how close the DKC music sounds compared to the SNES version. Mute City sounds great on FM as well.

Nice. However, I wouldn't call Ken's stage from street fighter an SNES game. The original was an arcade game on CPS1, and there were two Street fighter II games on the Genesis itself.

Uh... it's sad that people genuinely thought this was how the Genesis sounds. This is a literal Soundfont with just recorded FM patches and DAC samples from only Sonic games.
